In late August, Project Director Deanna Chancellor and Training & Technical Assistance Specialist Bethany Black traveled to the White Earth Reservation in western Minnesota, where they spent several days working alongside the White Earth Tribal MDT as well as members of the Becker County and Clearwater County MDTs.

The customized two-day Team Academy, created in partnership with Lalania Walker, White Earth Child Advocacy Center Coordinator, began with an important conversation: an exploration of historical trauma and the role it continues to play in our society today. This grounding helped participants reflect not only on the challenges faced by the communities they serve, but also on the resilience, traditions and strengths that shape their work.

From there, our time together went deeper and became an opportunity for connection, collaboration and growth. Team members reflected on their roles within their disciplines and identified priorities and goals from their individual roles. Together, they built a unifying mission and vision, and by the end of the process, they identified five shared goals that will guide their work as a collective team.

The academy also provided space to strengthen the skills that help multidisciplinary teams thrive—building effective communication, navigating conflict and engaging in the kinds of crucial conversations that can be both challenging and transformative. The discussions were honest, practical and filled with commitment to supporting children and families with the best possible care.

Beyond the training room, Deanna and Bethany were honored to tour the White Earth Child Advocacy Center and see firsthand the many ways advocacy touches the daily lives of children and families. One of the unique programs their CAC offers is a sewing circle, where children create traditional clothing. This activity not only preserves cultural heritage but also fosters creativity, healing, and community connection.

Our two days together concluded in celebration. Participants honored one another’s efforts, recognized their shared accomplishments, and created healing bags to take with them—tangible reminders of resilience, care and the bonds formed during their time together.

The visit to White Earth reflected the heart of multidisciplinary teamwork: people from different disciplines and communities joining together, learning from one another, and building something stronger than what any could achieve alone. NCARC is deeply grateful to the White Earth, Becker and Clearwater MDTs for their dedication, and to Lalania Walker for her inspiring leadership in making this gathering possible.
